Fans of the U.S. women’s soccer team will see a bunch of new faces this Olympics, including Sophia Smith. The 23-year-old Portland Thorns forward is headed to Paris to compete with Team USA—and she's not messing around.
When the squad lost the 2023 World Cup, Sophia posted that the team will "be back and hungrier than ever. ❤️"
Sophia has a huge support system back home, including parents Kenny and Mollie Smith, plus sisters Savannah and Gabby Smith. But perhaps no one will be cheering her on more than fiancé Michael Wilson, a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. Safe to say he knows a bit about high-pressure sporting events!
But how did Michael and Sophia meet, and how long have they been together? Keep reading to find out.
Does Sophia Smith have a boyfriend?
Well, she did—up until a few weeks ago, when the pair upgraded their status to fiancées.
“forever always meant with you. 🤍” Sophia wrote beneath a photo of the newly-engaged couple.
It seems that Michael set up a surprise engagement party for the two of them and their families after popping the question. In a series of snaps, the couple pose in front of a sign reading "She said yes," before joining a sit-down dinner.
Aww!
Sophia Smith and Michael Wilson met at Stanford University.
Michael and Sophia met at Stanford University while they were both dominating on their respective sports teams. He was a wide receiver on the football team, and Sophia was an all-star kicker on the school’s soccer team, per People. They made their relationship Instagram-official in 2019 with a sweet trip to San Francisco.
It appears like the couple made it official on January 10, 2019, as Michael celebrated their one-year anniversary with a sweet post.
“Life’s a blessing with you in it🖤,” Michael captioned a selfie of the pair. “I love you! Happy one year stud.”
Michael plays in the NFL.
Michael's tenure at Stanford was unfortunately plagued by injuries. After an impressive rookie season in 2018, Michael was forced to sit out for part of his sophom*ore season due to a foot injury, subsequently leaving sports for a year to heal. He also missed part of his fifth year in 2022 due to a collarbone fracture, according to ESPN.
Despite this, he was a team captain during his final year with the team, according to his bio. He also received the Jim Reynolds Award twice, which is "awarded to the senior player whose courage on the field and devotion to the game are an inspiration to all," per Stanford.
The 6 foot 2-inch footballer has since taken his talents to the NFL, where he has played for the last two years. He is currently a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, according to his player bio.
In the 2023 season, he made 38 receptions for 565 yards. He also scored three touchdowns.
Sophia and Michael are moving in together.
These lovebirds have been long distance for a portion of their relationship, since Sophia ultimately left Stanford two years early to enter the 2020 NWSL Draft. She was selected as the overall first-round pick by the Portland Thorns.
Now that they're fiancés, the two are moving in together in Arizona, they announced on social media.
"Exciting times ahead!" Sophia wrote on Instagram. We just got matched with the perfect mattress at @mattressfirm for our new home."
They still prioritize each other.
While these two no doubt have busy AF schedules, they still take time to spend together. In January, the duo took a tropical vacation, where Sophia wrote that she was in "pureeee bliss 🌊🌴☀️"
They also love to take coffee dates...
...and celebrate major holidays together, like this snap of them on New Year's Eve!
Congrats, Michael and Sophia!
