The Fallout series is hugely popular and Fallout 4 was generally well-received (at least compared to what came after), but that doesn't mean everyoneagrees on everything about it. There are so many ways to play and choices to make that no two playthroughs will be that similar. Who's the best companion? Which faction should you side with? Which are the best perks?

On Reddit, you'll see thousands of posts discussing these topics and more.General agreementscan and do develop, but every now and again, a brave soul will stick their head above the parapet and announce they disagree with the majority. These are some of those disagreements.
10 It's Better Than Fallout 3
Generally speaking, Fallout 4 was seen as a step down following the success of rebooting the serieswith Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Certainly, this is born out by the Metacritic ratings for the two games, with 3 having a score of 91 percent on PC and 4 having 84 percent.
But a Reddit user named u/5prunk believes that 4 is actually better than 3. Admittedly they say that both games have poor stories and are poor RPGs, but they believe 4 has the edge because of its better graphics, gameplay, and exploration.
9 The Institute Can Be The Good Guys
On paper, the Institute look pretty bad. They kidnap settlers and experiment on them, turning them into super mutants. They wipe out an entire settlement for unknowingly harboring a synth. They create self-aware synths and then enslave them.
But Reddit user u/THExPILLOx believes that in their playthrough at least, the Institute could be a force for good once the player has taken charge. Their scientists could create new food sources that are resistant to radiation, synths modelled on people that have been lost, and a cure for super mutants.
8 Settlement Building Isn't That Bad
The addition of settlement building was not something anyone was looking for in a Fallout game, and many players try to have as little to do with it as possible. Reddit user u/jokersleuth, on the other hand, loves this element.

They believe that it adds to the feeling of survival and a sense of purpose, and have spent most of their 400-500 hours in the game building. They'd also like it to return in Fallout 5, and be more integrated into the story.
7 The Fully Voiced Player Character Was A Good Addition
Fallout 4 did something that no Fallout had done before and added a voice to the player character. A lot of people were unhappy with this, saying it took away from the "blank slate" nature of the Sole Survivor.
But Reddit user u/Impatient-Lawyer disagrees. For them it makes the conversations with other characters seem more real, rather than just clicking an unheard line. It also adds to the immersion by showing the emotions of the protagonist as they were speaking the lines.
6 Maxson's Brotherhood Of Steel AreBetter For The Wasteland ThanLyons' Version Was
The Brotherhood in 4 are generally seen as techno-fascists, in contrast to the more friendly version in 3. They horde technology for themselves, and are pretty racist against every non-human around.
In contrast, a Reddit user named u/akme2000 thinks that Maxson's Brotherhood were better for the people of the wasteland. Lyons' group in 3 were too soft, and unable to deal with anything until the player shows up, whereas Maxson's Brotherhood gets stuff done. There is also no evidence for Maxson's group attacking non-feral ghouls, in contrast to the Brotherhood in 3.
5 Piper Is the Worst Companion
There are plenty of companions in Fallout 4, and Piper Wright is one of the most popular. She's a reporter who always seeks the truth, even at risk to herself. But for Reddit user u/Asdrubael_Vect, that truth is merely her opinion.
RELATED:
For them, Piper is so convinced her own view is correct that she won't listen to anyone else, and spends her time trying to force everyone else into her own way of thinking. Rather than doing realistic things that will make life better for the people of the Commonwealth, she is attempting to start a revolution for the revolution's sake.
4 To All Intents And Purposes, Gen 3 Synths Are Human
The big question thatdetermines whether you side with the Railroad or the Institute is how far you consider synths to be alive. Indeed, they do not display many of the characteristics we expect to see in living things, e.g. they do not reproduce,or feed,or sleep, or age.
On the other hand, the Gen 3 synths are derived from human DNA, are assembled from bones, muscles, and tissues, andare largelyindistinguishable from humans right down to the cellular level. For Reddit user u/8Bit-Armory this makes them human.
3 Becoming A Ruthless Tyrant Should Be The Canonical Ending
A canonical ending has not been, and may never be, confirmed for Fallout 4, but most fans believe that siding with the Minutemen would be the most likely. Reddit user u/Wrextasy disagrees, however. They think that the canonical ending should be becoming the leader of the raiders in the Nuka-World DLC.
They believethe Sole Survivor would havehad their mind brokenby witnessing the murder of their spouse, finding out their son is a monster, and watching nothing in the Commonwealth ever improving, despite their best efforts.
2 Knight Rhys Isn't That Bad
Knight Rhys is a mechanic in the Brotherhood of Steel, and he's not very popular with the fans because of how rude and standoffish he is to the Soul Survivor, seemingly for no reason. However, according to Reddit user u/ShipmentOfWood, Rhys has every reason to dislike the protagonist.

He's a dedicated member of the Brotherhood, and he watches the Sole Survivor waltz in and be promoted, despite palling around with synths, ghouls, and super mutants. He also has to stay behind while theplayer gets to accompany Maxson and Liberty Prime to attack the Institute. Basically, he's jealous.
1 Preston Garvey Is The Best Companion
Preston Garvey became a bit of a meme after Fallout 4's release, with players making fun of his incessant and annoying "another settlement needs our help." But for Reddit user u/Nat_Libertarian, keeping Preston around makes him much less annoying as you notice the phrase less.
Preston also has plenty of unique dialogue that is funny and endearing, some of which is amongst the best in the game. He's also useful as a fighter, with a weapon that is great even at low levels.
