Where should I start learning anatomy drawing? ›

When you first approach figure drawing, you need to start out with establishing the basic volumes of the figure using spheres, boxes, and cylinders. By simply beginning with these basic shapes and then building up the complexity as you go along, you will be able to make your drawing maintain its sense of dimension.

Here are some of my sketchbooks where I make anatomical drawings and scribble notes about proportions and construction of a human body, head and face. Doing such exercises on a regular basis is a great way to learn anatomy for artists.

It's something that you slowly build alongside your other skills, so in total it might take a couple of years to really get a good understanding of anatomy. But you don't have to think about it as this huge project that you only succeed with after two years. Break it down into smaller chunks.

Knowledge of anatomy cannot be underestimated when it comes to drawing realistic figures from life, memory, and imagination. Professional artists draw what they know, not what they see. That is why good figurative artwork depends greatly on how well you know human anatomy.

Visual Aids

One of the most effective and fastest ways to learn anatomy is through various visual aids. Whether the visual materials include atlases, diagrams, 2D illustrations, 3D materials, or videos, the visual aids are real game-changers. And by real, we mean really huge game-changers.

Observation: Study anatomy, how people walk, their poses, the different types of bodies… Create a reference gallery in your mind and, if possible, take pictures! Think in 3D: To understand a figure/shape, it is best to analyze it from different perspectives.

#1: Start with the Basics.

There are a lot of concepts in anatomy and it can look overwhelming. In medical school where everything is complex, you'll find that it's best to keep things simple. Start with brushing up on your general anatomy. What are the parts of your face?

The human body is complex, so creating anatomically correct drawings isn't something you can learn in a day; it may take weeks of practice and studying reference drawings to truly understand the shape of each muscle and how they all connect.

In a college or university setting, when learning anatomy, students usually have difficulty trying to visualize different aspects of the human body, which inherently are too complex or abstract to fully understand without the aid of useful visual explanations or visualizations.

Even our language is composed of letters drawn on paper to form ideas. Not only is drawing a form of literacy, it also helps your memory! A study from Journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology found that participants that doodled were 29% more likely to remember mundane information.

How long does it take the average person to learn to draw? ›

That all depends on your natural abilities, how well you adapt to drawing techniques, and much more. Learning to draw is complex, and while you might pick up on basic skills fairly quickly, it could take several years or longer before you're a fully capable artist.

The common misunderstanding is that after a couple of classes you will become a good artist. The reality is that it takes much longer than that. Commonly between 5 to 10 years of proper training to reach a level of proficiency.

Use visual aids such as anatomical models, diagrams, and interactive apps to enhance your understanding. Additionally, consider joining study groups or forming study partnerships to discuss and quiz each other on anatomical structures.

To fully understand diagrams, try redrawing them and annotate them with facts and features. When you draw bones, muscles or tissue use different colours for each to make them easier to visualize. Then hang the diagrams and charts around the room on the walls to visualize the bigger picture.
